Shelter over Chornobyl’s 4th reactor is running on generators, IAEA says

The confinement structure built over the destroyed fourth reactor of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant lost power following a Russian attack. It is now being powered by emergency diesel generators, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
It is noted that currently, two emergency diesel generators are supplying power to the shelter after Russia attacked the Slavutych substation.
"The site swiftly switched to alternate lines, and power was restored, except for the New Safe Confinement (NSC), which covers the old sarcophagus built after the 1986 Chernobyl accident," the IAEA stated.
Other facilities at Chornobyl NPP are fully powered and operating from regular electricity sources, the IAEA added.
On October 1, Russian forces carried out an aerial attack on the Slavutych substation. As a result, the Chornobyl NPP experienced a blackout. In particular, the New Safe Confinement (NSC), the key structure isolating the destroyed fourth reactor, went offline.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the Russian strike on the energy facility in Slavutych was deliberate. Due to this attack, the Chornobyl plant experienced a blackout lasting over three hours.
