Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced plans to hold early parliamentary elections. They could take place between late September and mid-November, Bloomberg reports.
"The elections will be in the period between September and November, which means between late September and mid-November," Vučić told the state broadcaster RTS.
Bloomberg notes that the elections to the 250-seat parliament could become Serbia's fifth in a decade and the fourth to be held early. Vučić's party, for its part, has dominated elections since 2012.
What preceded this
Serbia was shaken by student protests that began after the collapse of a railway station roof in 2024, which killed 16 people. As of now, the country has been facing anti-government protests for more than a year.
Opposition parties and activists, for their part, accuse the government of corruption and incompetence.
In mid-August 2025, clashes broke out between protesters and police. As a result of the incident, six police officers were injured, and 38 people were detained.
