'Philippine barrier' for the Ukrainian
Svitolina entered the quarterfinal clash after a confident win over Germany’s Eva Lys. Meanwhile, her opponent Alexandra Eala had already become the tournament’s biggest sensation, knocking out second seed and champion Elena Rybakina in the previous round.
This was the first-ever official head-to-head meeting between the Ukrainian and the Filipina.
From the very beginning, Eala imposed her style of play and made a strong start, winning three consecutive games. Svitolina showed character and managed to narrow the gap to a minimum (3–4).
However, at the decisive moment, the Filipina closed out the first set in her favor — 6–3.
Failed comeback in the second set
The start of the second set was closely contested, with the players exchanging games and breaks. Eala then again produced a run of three consecutive games and moved within reach of victory.
Svitolina made another attempt to turn the match around and closed the gap to within one game of her opponent.
However, no comeback followed — in the tenth game, Alexandra calmly converted her advantage and sealed the match.
Consequences of the defeat
Svitolina was the only Ukrainian representative in the singles draw in Berlin, meaning Ukraine has now lost all its participants in the tournament.
Alexandra Eala will face Czech player Linda Noskova in the semifinal.
It was previously reported that the legendary Williams sisters will play at Wimbledon 2026.
