The US Senate has passed a resolution requiring American President Donald Trump to end military actions against Iran, according to CNN.

The resolution demands that the President stop the participation of US forces in any combat operations against Iran without separate authorization from Congress. 50 senators supported the measure, while 48 voted against it.

Alongside Democrats, four Republicans voted in favor of the resolution:

  • Rand Paul
  • Susan Collins
  • Lisa Murkowski
  • Bill Cassidy

Meanwhile, Democratic Senator John Fetterman voted against the measure.

The outcome was also influenced by the absence of two Republican senators — Mitch McConnell and Dave McCormick — who had previously voted against similar initiatives.

Trump's reaction

US President Donald Trump reacted sharply to the Senate's decision.

On Truth Social, he called the vote "poorly timed and meaningless," and said the resolution effectively helped the opposing side. He also criticized the four Republicans who supported the measure, claiming they only made his work more difficult.

Does the resolution have real impact?

Despite its political significance, the legal consequences remain debated.

The measure is a so-called concurrent resolution, which does not require the president's signature. The White House emphasized that such documents are not legally binding, meaning the Senate vote will have no practical effect.

A representative of the presidential administration also stated that the resolution calls for withdrawing US forces from combat against Iran, but no such combat operations are currently taking place. According to him, they ended after a ceasefire was reached.

At the same time, a Democratic aide in the House of Representatives who helped advance the measure told CNN that the resolution is binding. However, its enforcement would likely have to be resolved through legal channels.

Why Democrats insist on the vote

Democrats have repeatedly pushed over recent months to limit the president's war powers in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Senator Tim Kaine said that, despite agreements between the US and Iran, decisions on the use of force must involve Congress. He argued that current stability provides an opportunity to avoid further escalation and ensure legislative oversight.

This is the tenth Senate vote this year aimed at restricting US presidential war powers regarding Iran.

Background

Earlier this month, the US House of Representatives also passed a resolution limiting Donald Trump's war powers concerning Iran. The measure passed with 215 votes in favor and 208 against. Four Republicans joined Democrats in support.

After the vote, Trump sharply criticized members of his own party who supported the measure, saying their actions were unpatriotic.

In recent weeks, relations between Washington and Tehran have remained one of the central topics in US politics. Trump previously said he was ready to resume military action against Iran if it violates agreements on its nuclear program. According to the President, preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons is more important than the global economic crisis.

At the same time, the White House leader claimed progress in negotiations with Iran and said Tehran had agreed to extensive international inspections of its nuclear program.
