Security Service of Ukraine announces suspicion against Russian general

The Security Service of Ukraine has announced suspicion against Russian Colonel General Aleksandr Chaiko, former commander of the Eastern Military District of the Russian army. During the battle for Kyiv, Chaiko ordered the shelling of civilian residential buildings, according to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
In March 2022, according to the investigation, Chaiko ordered the shelling of the village of Teterivske in the Vyshhorod district of Kyiv region. He also instructed the use of combat aircraft and artillery in the attack.
"To carry out the strikes, the occupiers used aerial bombs, including FAB-500s, as well as munitions for BM-27 Uragan multiple launch rocket systems and S-8 unguided aviation rockets," the statement said.
Among the pieces of evidence of the Russian general’s criminal activity is an intercepted audio recording in which Chaiko gives orders to his subordinates, demanding the use of heavy weapons against civilian targets in the Ukrainian settlement.
"Based on the collected evidence, SBU investigators have formally charged the Russian officer in absentia with a new count under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (war crimes resulting in loss of life). Comprehensive measures are ongoing to bring the perpetrator to justice," the SBU added.

On July 17, the Security Service of Ukraine announced suspicion against a Russian colonel who carried out a ballistic Iskander missile strike on Odesa in April 2024. Since the suspect is evading justice, the charges were filed in absentia.
Recently, a Russian military serviceman, Semyon Solovov, who held several hundred civilians hostage during the occupation in the Chernihiv region, was sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison.
