Why can you go to prison for the numbers '86 47' in the US, and who has already been prosecuted?

Law enforcement authorities in the United States have launched an urgent investigation after a giant "86 47" inscription appeared on the grass of the National Mall in Washington. The president's administration regards this incident as a veiled political threat to the life of Donald Trump, according to Fox News.

Unknown perpetrators carved the numbers into the grass right between the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial, in the very heart of Washington. Investigators have already collected grass samples for forensic analysis. Authorities are trying to determine whether the perpetrators used chemicals or special tools.

The US Department of the Interior called the incident deranged vandalism and promised that those responsible will be found and punished.

"Any threat against the President is taken very seriously by the Department, and our U.S. Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable," the Interior Department stated.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle spoke even more harshly. He called for severe condemnation of anyone who supports political violence.

"Anyone who engages in or endorses political violence or assassination culture must be condemned in the harshest terms possible. They should also immediately seek psychiatric help to treat their severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has warped their brains and made them sick in the head," Ingle emphasized.

What the numbers "86 47" mean

This is old restaurant slang meaning to get rid of something. In a professional kitchen, eighty-six (86) means that a menu item is sold out, or that a customer should no longer be served alcohol because of their behavior (they are shown the door).

In a broader sense, "86" has long been used in English as a verb meaning "to get rid of something," "to cancel," or "to throw out." Democrats often use this slang as a call for impeachment or resignation.

However, this expression is also used by criminals. In American gangster and criminal circles, the phrase "to eighty-six someone" has for decades been used as a euphemism for "to kill someone," "to eliminate," or "to bury."

A common interpretation of the origin of this expression in the criminal world is eight miles from the city, six feet under ground.

Donald Trump himself has stated live on television that anyone who knows anything about crime knows that 86 is a mob phrase meaning to kill someone.

As is known, Donald Trump is the 47th president of the US, so the message is clear, but the devil is in the details.

Context is everything

There are currently heated debates among lawyers in the United States regarding these numbers. The Department of the Interior believes that the use of "86 47" is a so-called dog whistle, which radically minded people use to call for the physical elimination of Trump without formally violating social media rules against direct calls for violence.

The position of civil rights activists is the opposite. Many liberal groups and judges (including a recent ruling by District Judge Randolph Moss regarding protests by the organization Accountability NOW USA) note that for most citizens, "86" simply means "to fire," "to remove from office," or "to vote against."

They consider the criminalization of these numbers a violation of the First Amendment of the US Constitution (freedom of speech), because the context is political, not terrorist.

Precedent with the former FBI director

The Department of Justice has already charged former FBI Director James Comey for a similar call. He posted a vacation photo in which he used shells on a beach to spell out "86 47."

The former FBI director now faces up to 10 years in prison, and the case has been sent to court. Comey denies any wrongdoing and claims he did not intend to call for violence.

What is known about assassination attempts on Trump

The last known assassination attempt on the US president was reported on April 25, when a person with a weapon was detained during Trump's dinner with journalists. Several shots were fired.

In February 2026, a US court sentenced Ryan Routh to life in prison for attempting to shoot the president at a golf course in Florida in September 2024.

But the first assassination attempt should be considered the shooting in Pennsylvania. Then a bullet wounded Trump in the ear.

However, Americans do not believe in all the assassination attempts on Trump. According to polls, the public considers the Pennsylvania shooting to be real, but the shooting during the dinner to be staged.
