Fans of Italian cuisine know oregano as a fragrant seasoning for pizza or pasta. But experts say this familiar herb has far more benefits than it seems. Cleveland Clinic explains how oregano can help fight infections.

Vitamin power with antibacterial effects

Oregano has been used for more than 2,000 years, starting in Ancient Greece. The plant contains vitamins C, E, and A, which strengthen the immune system and protect eyesight.
"Oregano contains a variety of antioxidant compounds. It's been used in traditional medicine for a range of ailments," explains dietitian Devon Peart.

In addition, oregano contains folic acid (vitamin B9), important for cell growth, and vitamin K, which supports blood and bone health.

Natural body protection

Oregano leaves contain flavonoids, compounds with powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. They can reduce the risk of heart disease and even cancer. Another active compound is thymol, which is also found in thyme. It helps destroy harmful bacteria and boosts immunity.

Studies in Iran and Egypt have shown a link between oregano consumption and improved conditions related to anxiety and depression. While these results have so far been confirmed only in animals, they are promising.

How to consume oregano

  • A pinch a day is enough to get its antibacterial and vitamin benefits.
  • Oregano is rich in vitamin K, so people taking blood-thinning medication should be cautious.
  • You should not ingest oregano essential oil because it can be toxic.
  • If you experience stomach discomfort or bloating, oregano tea can help relax the digestive muscles and ease digestion.
