Scientists reveal how many minutes of life cigarette takes
It is no secret that smoking is very harmful. A new study has shown how many minutes of life are taken away by smoking a single cigarette, the University College London reports.
How many minutes of life does one cigarette take away?
The study from University College London claims that, on average, one cigarette smoked takes about 20 minutes off a person's life.
It has been calculated that men lose about 17 minutes of life for every cigarette they smoke, while a woman's life is shortened by 22 minutes with the same action.
The study also showed that people who decided to quit smoking for a week, from January 1 to 8, could save a whole day of their life if they smoked 10 cigarettes a day.
According to the UK National Statistics Office, in 2023, approximately six million people aged 18 and over smoke cigarettes.
Evidence shows that people lose about 20 minutes of life on average for each cigarette they smoke. The earlier a person quits smoking, the longer they will live.
Quitting smoking at any age significantly improves health, and the benefits begin almost immediately.
"It's never too late to make a positive change for your health, and there are a range of effective products and treatments that can help smokers quit for good," experts claim.
Dangerous consequences of smoking cigarettes:
- Smoking thickens the blood and increases the likelihood of clot formation.
- It raises blood pressure and heart rate, forcing the heart to work harder than usual.
- It narrows your arteries, reducing the amount of oxygen-rich blood circulating to your organs.
