Scientists identify most harmful alcohol causing weight gain
A new study has identified a popular alcoholic drink that could worsen your health and contribute to weight gain, Daily Express reports.
What scientists have learned about most harmful alcohol
The research, conducted by US scientists, focused on over 1,900 adults who were surveyed about their alcohol consumption habits. Participants were categorized based on whether they drank only beer (38.9%), wine (21.8%), spirits (18.2%), or a combination of alcohol types(21%).
The participants were asked about their diet, and the researchers compared this information against the Healthy Eating Index, a scoring metric that can be used to determine the overall quality of someone's diet.
The alarming study found that none of those four groups were anywhere near a score over 80, indicative of an adequate diet, but one group stood out as the lowest.
Those who preferred wine scored around 55 points, while spirits drinkers and those having different types of drinks ranked up close to 53 points.
However, young men who smoked and had lower incomes tended to choose beer, earning just 49 points.
According to the research group, beer drinkers also had the highest daily caloric intake and got the least amount of exercise, factors that put them at higher risk of obesity and diseases related to it.
The study noted that wine, especially red wine, is often consumed with more balanced meals, such as those containing meat, vegetables, and dairy products. On the other hand, beer is frequently consumed in settings where meals are low in fiber and high in carbohydrates and processed meats.
Experts also suggest that the foods we choose may influence our alcohol preferences. For example, fried or salty foods tend to increase thirst, prompting people to prefer beer over other drinks.
In addition, a nutritionist recently shared insights on the silent disease of the liver.
