Scholz unveils new military aid package for Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced this during a press conference with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv, announced that Ukraine will receive not only the sixth IRIS-T system from Germany but also Sea King helicopters and other weapons.
"Germany has just provided Ukraine with emergency winter assistance to restore and repair the worst damage quickly," Scholz said.
He noted that Germany is Ukraine's second-largest partner, with a total aid volume of about €28 billion, trailing only the United States.
Scholz also stated that Ukraine would receive Patriot launchers and Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns in December. Moreover, he announced that in the coming year, Germany would supply Ukraine with six Sea King helicopters, air defense systems, howitzers, combat and reconnaissance drones.
It is worth noting that the new aid package from Germany also includes:
- IRIS-T air defense systems;
- ten Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks;
- 60 M84 and M80 infantry fighting vehicles and armored combat vehicles;
- 6,000 unguided missiles and 500 guided missiles.
Germany's support for Ukraine
Germany is a key partner of Ukraine, providing military, humanitarian, and financial assistance during the full-scale war. Since the beginning of Russia’s aggression, Germany has delivered modern weaponry to Ukraine, including Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled artillery systems, IRIS-T air defense systems, Leopard 2 tanks, Marder infantry fighting vehicles, and other equipment.
In addition to military aid, Germany funds humanitarian projects to restore critical infrastructure and support Ukrainians forced to leave their homes.
Today, Scholz arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit. This is his second visit to Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. During his visit, he announced a new military aid package for Ukraine.
