The elected US president, Donald Trump, has a "more nuanced" position on Russia’s war against Ukraine than is commonly assumed. He will not pursue peace against the will of the Ukrainians, stated German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, according to Barron's.

Scholz shared that he had "perhaps surprisingly, a very detailed and good conversation" with Trump on Sunday. They discussed the situation surrounding the war in Ukraine.

According to the Chancellor, he got the impression that Trump "has a more nuanced position than is often assumed". Scholz believes that Trump will not "make a deal over the head of the Ukrainians".

At the same time, the German leader assured that his country would not accept a "peace by diktat" in Ukraine.

Scholz's talks with Putin

Today Olaf Scholz held his first talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in two years.

During the conversation, the Chancellor urged the Kremlin leader to withdraw Russian forces from Ukraine, end the war, and start peace negotiations. The German government’s press office also mentioned that Scholz had informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the call.

However, Zelenskyy criticized the call, describing it as a "Pandora's box".
