Scholz's party members attacked by far-right youth in Berlin, several casualties reported
In Berlin, a group of aggressive young people with far-right views attacked campaigners from the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). As a result of the incident, two police officers and one party member were injured, reports ntv.
According to the investigation, the perpetrators met with representatives of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) near their campaign stand at a bus stop. Two suspects, in coordination with two others, first knocked off the hats of two SPD activists and then began to insult and physically assault them.
The victims fell to the ground, and the attackers struck them in the head and upper body. The situation was intervened by two police officers. One of the officers was racially insulted by one of the suspects and later injured in the face by a shard of broken glass. The other officer had a fist bone broken by the radicals.
The attacks were stopped only after the arrival of additional emergency services. Both police officers and the injured SPD activist were taken to the hospital.
The police and the prosecution have initiated an investigation. A petition has been filed for the detention of all four suspects, aged 16 to 19.
The crimes are classified under two charges of causing grievous bodily harm, with one case involving an assault on law enforcement officers in particularly aggravated circumstances.
Aggressive demonstration
Law enforcement officials do not rule out that the perpetrators arrived in the capital to participate in a demonstration in the Friedrichshain area. The far-right march involved 63 people, while the counter-demonstration saw at least 2,000 participants. Around 1,000 officers were deployed by the authorities.
During the demonstrations, objects and smoke grenades were thrown onto the road, and stones and bottles were hurled at the police. Journalists were also injured.
As a result of the violent demonstrations, 40 criminal investigations have been initiated. Thirty-one police officers were injured.
Deterioration of the criminal situation in Germany
In recent months, Germany has seen an increase in violent attacks by teenagers against politicians and immigrants from other countries.
In May of this year, four men attacked Matthias Eke, a candidate for the European Parliament from the SPD, in Dresden. He was hospitalized and underwent emergency surgery.
In February, a gang of minors in Düsseldorf killed two Ukrainian basketball players, aged 17 and 18.
The court handed down long prison sentences to the perpetrators. Two of the convicted individuals hold German citizenship, while the others are Syrian nationals.
