Scholz opposes Ukraine's invitation to NATO
A country at war cannot become a NATO member. Moreover, Ukraine's invitation to the Alliance is not on the agenda, stated German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, according to citing ZDF.
Scholz reminded that NATO made decisions regarding Ukraine's membership prospects during the summits in Vilnius and Washington, and in his opinion, "there is no need for any new decisions beyond this at the moment."
"A country at war cannot become a NATO member. Everyone knows this, and there are no disagreements about it. In NATO, invitations are usually quickly linked to membership," he added.
Moreover, the German Chancellor stated that Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine requires measured actions that, on the one hand, ensure support for Kyiv, and on the other hand, guarantee that it does not escalate into a war between Moscow and NATO.
"This is where I clearly express my position and will not change it," he emphasized.
Ukraine's accession to NATO
Although Kyiv did not receive an invitation to the Alliance during NATO's July summit in Washington, discussions about Ukraine's future in NATO have not ceased.
Last week, Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said NATO countries need to discuss the conditions under which Ukraine would receive an invitation and join the bloc.
Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the majority of NATO countries support inviting Ukraine to NATO, though some states maintain a more reserved position.
Today, Politico reported that seven countries are blocking Ukraine's invitation to NATO.
