German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a phone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump to discuss security policy issues in Europe.
According to the German government, the discussion focused on the ongoing war in Ukraine.
"They agreed that Russia's war against Ukraine has gone on for too long and emphasized the importance of quickly moving toward a just, fair, and lasting peace," the statement said.
Scholz also assured Trump that Germany would continue supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression for as long as necessary.
Trump's position on ending the war
Donald Trump has repeatedly stressed the need to end Russia's war against Ukraine. He has expressed his intention to engage with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin to achieve this goal.
Recently, Trump stated that the Ukrainian president is ready for peace and could negotiate a deal to end the war.
According to Reuters, Keith Kellogg, whom Trump has nominated as the US Special Representative for Ukraine, may visit Kyiv in early January. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has reportedly confirmed such a visit.
Journalists noted that Kellogg does not plan to visit Moscow but will limit his trips to European capitals.
