NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said he has invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to take part in the Alliance leaders’ summit in Ankara during a press conference after the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Helsingborg.
According to the NATO chief, an official invitation has already been sent to the Ukrainian President.
"I've invited him already, yes, I did. He will be there, like in The Hague," Rutte said.
At the same time, he did not provide details about the possible participation of the Ukrainian delegation in the event.
NATO assesses the situation at the front
Mark Rutte also commented on the situation on the frontline and the actions of Ukrainian forces in the war against Russia. According to him, recent data indicate positive changes for Ukraine.
He also said that Ukrainian forces are gradually regaining territory and stabilizing the battlefield situation. Rutte stressed that this is not happening on a large scale, but developments are moving in a direction that is not favorable for the Kremlin.
The NATO leaders’ summit in Ankara is expected to become one of the key security events of the year and to shape the future security architecture for the Alliance and Europe.
Earlier, NATO officials stated that Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance should be the next logical step, but this requires political consensus among allies.
