Russians execute 6 Ukrainian prisoners of war
A video of Russian terrorists executing unarmed Ukrainian prisoners of war is circulating online. Lack of accountability turns Russia's crimes into a systematic pattern, says Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights.
According to Lubinets, in the video, the Russians shot six Ukrainian soldiers who were captured. The fate of the seventh soldier is unknown, as the video cuts off.
“Each of the captured soldiers is shot in front of their comrades. At the same time, Russian occupants order them to “lie down and shut up,” and the “operator” of the crime says “One is mine,” and later he is seen firing a number of bullets into the back of one of the prisoners of war,” Lubinets writes.
The Ombudsman added that the Russian troops have never been known for decent treatment of prisoners of war and have once again demonstrated their helplessness and criminality.
“I am once again sending information about this crime to the UN and the ICRC. This fact must be recorded! Lack of accountability has turned the crime into a system,” he added.
Investigation launched
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, a pre-trial investigation into the shooting of Ukrainian prisoners of war in the Donetsk region has been launched.
According to preliminary data, Russians captured 6 soldiers during an assault on Ukrainian positions and subsequently shot them dead.
“Investigative actions are currently underway to establish all the circumstances of the crime and the persons involved in its commission,” the Prosecutor General's Office adds.
Russia's war crimes
Russia committed numerous war crimes during the war against Ukraine. These include mass killings of civilians, and shelling of residential areas, hospitals, schools, and other civilian infrastructure. The most high-profile atrocities were committed in Bucha, Irpin, Mariupol, and other cities, where torture, execution,s and violence against civilians were recorded.
The United Nations Security Council recently held a meeting on Russia's crimes against Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians.
