Russian troops maintain initiative in ground operations, says Estonian General Staff
The chief of the General Staff of the Estonian Defense League Colonel Eero Rebo thinks that Russia maintains the initiative with its ground forces in the war against Ukraine, but is far away from making significant progress or reaching its military goals, reports ERR.
According to Rebo, Russia's main efforts in the Donetsk region are aimed at capturing the city of Avdiivka. More active hostilities also continue in the Bakhmut and Donetsk directions.
"For some time in Avdiivka, there were signals that maneuver or reconnaissance units were seen inside the settlement. But they were unable to organize a siege of the Ukrainians. In essence, fierce battles are going on there, but the tactical situation is unchanged," said Rebo.
Rebo also noted that in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, the Russian armed forces continue to attack the territories liberated by Ukraine.
The Ukrainians continue to hold the bridgehead created on the banks of the Dnipro River, for which fighting is going on.
Situation in Kharkiv direction
Colonel emphasized that the situation at the front in the northern direction has not changed significantly. The armed forces of the Russian Federation continue to demonstrate a large presence in the Kursk and Bryansk regions and will probably try to advance from there sooner or later.
Russia is also actively using air and artillery support in the Kupiansk and Lyman directions. According to the Rebo, despite the Russian initiative, their progress is very insignificant.
He believes that there is still a possibility that in the coming weeks, attacks will be carried out on the areas bordering the Belgorod and Kharkiv regions, to further tie Ukrainians to border protection.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also stated that Ukrainian soldiers were holding positions on the left bank of the Dnipro River, had repelled Russian attacks near Avdiivka, and hit three enemy ammunition depots.
