Russian threat in Arctic - Denmark urges US to strengthen defense

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that Greenland is part of NATO, and therefore, the Alliance should work more actively on Arctic security, according to the politician.
The Danish government head pointed out that Vice President Vance made it clear that the United States respects Greenland's sovereignty and the right of its people to self-determination.
“Denmark is a good and strong ally. For all NATO members. We face a threat from Russia, and we have significantly increased defense spending. For many years, we have stood side by side with the Americans in very difficult situations. So, the description of Denmark made by the Vice President is not accurate,” Frederiksen stated.
At the same time, the prime minister emphasized the priority of the overall security situation in the Arctic, with the help of "more surveillance, new Arctic ships, long-range drones, and satellite communications."
“More opportunities will come later, and we will be able to strengthen security more quickly if we can get the necessary supplies, including from the US,” the Danish prime minister wrote.
She also stressed that Greenland is part of NATO, and that is why the Alliance must significantly increase its presence in the Arctic. Security in the Arctic is a concern for NATO and all Arctic members of the Alliance.
“We are ready - day and night - to cooperate with the Americans. Cooperate on the necessary international rules of the game and strengthening the defense of all NATO members,” Frederiksen wrote.
Trump's claims on Greenland
In the administration of US President Donald Trump, there were statements about the desire to buy or establish total control over the island nation of Greenland, which is still under partial protection by Denmark.
Trump stated that the US must take control of Greenland to establish global security and believes the country cannot do without the island.
Vice President JD Vance accused Greenland’s authorities of insufficient funding for security infrastructure. He also stated that the US does not plan to increase its military presence in the country.
However, the authorities of Greenland disagreed with Washington's intentions. The four parties that won the elections in Greenland stated in their coalition agreement that the island nation belongs to the Greenlanders.
