Russian submarine spotted in NATO waters

On Thursday, October 9, a Russian submarine surfaced off the coast of France. In response to the incident, the Alliance stated its readiness to defend itself, according to a post by NATO’s Maritime Command on X.
“A French Navy frigate conducts surveillance of the Alliance’s maritime approaches, marking the presence of a Russian submarine operating on the surface off the coast of Brittany,” the post said.
The command also added that NATO stands ready to defend our Alliance with constant vigilance and maritime awareness across the Atlantic.

Other incidents
A few weeks ago, on September 17, a Russian fishing vessel was spotted in the Øresund Strait near Sweden. Soon after, the Swedish Coast Guard and two NATO ships from Denmark and the United Kingdom intercepted it.
We also reported that in January 2025, the UK spotted a Russian reconnaissance ship in the English Channel.
