Russian General calls US Chairman of Joint Chiefs - NYT
The Chief of the General Staff of Russia, Valery Gerasimov, held a telephone conversation with the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Charles Q. Brown Jr. The call took place a week ago, reports The New York Times.
A rare phone call between the parties took place last Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving and six days after Russia launched a new medium-range ballistic missile at Ukraine, allegedly in response to Ukraine's use of American and British weapons to strike Russian territory.
During the conversation, Gerasimov informed Charles Brown that the launch of the Oreshnik ballistic missile had been planned long before the Biden administration agreed to allow Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles against military targets inside Russia.
Capt. Jereal Dorsey, a spokesman for General Brown, told reporters that at Gerasimov's request, General Brown agreed not to announce the call in advance.
He added that the two men discussed several global and regional security issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Recently, Bloomberg reported that some NATO members have started considering scenarios for ending Russia's war against Ukraine, with most of them leaning towards negotiations.
