Russian forces ramp up pressure in Zaporizhzhia region, says Ukraine's army chief

The Russian army has concentrated its efforts in several key directions. At the same time, the enemy has significantly intensified its activity in the Zaporizhzhia direction, says the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi.
According to him, the Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy, inflicting significant losses. Meanwhile, the enemy has focused its main efforts on the Pokrovsk, Toretsk, Lyman, and Novopavlivka directions, as well as in the border areas of the Sumy region near Russia.
"They have significantly intensified in the Zaporizhzhia direction, where they are conducting active offensive operations," the general noted.
According to Syrskyi, the Defense Forces are currently taking measures to strengthen defensive resilience by reinforcing threatened directions with reserves and increasing the level of fire damage to the enemy.
"We are also conducting active operations to improve our tactical positions, including on the territory of the aggressor country," he added.
Situation in the Zaporizhzhia direction
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as of May 31, in the Orikhiv direction, the occupiers launched four assaults on Ukrainian positions near Stepove and toward Novodanylivka. In the Novopavlivka direction, the enemy carried out 25 attacks during the past day.
The intensification of Russian activity in this direction is also evident from the increase in shelling. On May 31, Russians shelled Orikhiv in the Zaporizhzhia region, wounding one person. On the night of May 31, Russians attacked a village in the Polohy district of Zaporizhzhia region with air bombs. As a result of the enemy strikes, a young girl was killed and a teenager was injured.
