Russian propagandists claim the supposed capture of Maryinka in the Donetsk region, as the Ministry of Defense has already reported "full control" over the ruins of the settlement. However, it does not correspond to reality, as battles are still ongoing, according to a spokesperson of the Defense Forces of the Tavria direction, Oleksandr Shtupun.

He notes that the occupiers often present the desired achievements as real, the same implies to Maryinka.

"The Defense Ministry of Russia has always been characterized by false and overly positive statements for Russians," says Shtupun.

According to him, fierce and bloody battles are taking place in the settlement, and the enemy "has not taken Maryinka, as they claim."

The spokesperson points out that Russian occupiers have set a goal to "take Maryinka and Avdiivka" by the end of 2023.

"This will not happen, and the enemy is not capable of anything more," adds Shtupun.

Maryinka situation

Maryinka has been a front-line settlement since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2014. After the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, battles for the city resumed with high intensity. The city has suffered significant destruction, and most buildings have already turned into ruins.

In early December, Russian "war correspondents" began spreading reports of the supposed complete capture of Maryinka. Such statements have been made not for the first time. The Ministry of Defense has also already announced the supposed capture of the settlement.

According to UK intelligence, over recent weeks, Russian forces have gradually advanced through the ruins of Maryinka and may now control a larger part of the built-up territory.

The morning frontline update of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as of December 5 says that in the Maryinka direction, the Defense Forces continue to control the enemy in the areas of Maryinka and Novomykhailivka, repelling 18 enemy attacks.
