Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline situation as of December 5

The Russian attackers, aided by air support, attempted to penetrate the Ukrainian military's defenses in the Avdiivka area, but failed to do so, states the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian shelling
In total, the enemy launched 8 missiles and 68 air strikes and fired 87 times from multiple launch rocket systems at the positions of our troops and populated areas.
Yesterday, the Russian occupants launched an air strike against Ukraine, using 2 Kh-59 guided missiles and 22 Shahed-136/131 attack UAVs. The Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed 14 enemy drones and 1 Kh-59 guided missile.
Also, at the beginning of the day, the Russian occupiers again launched an air strike on Ukraine, using a Shahed-136/131 UAV. The consequences of the attack are being clarified.
The following areas were hit by air strikes: Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, and Pishchane in the Kharkiv region; Novoyehorivka, Serebryanske forestry in the Luhansk region; Spirne, Vyymka, Klishchiiivka, Andriivka, Avdiivka, Chasiv Yar, Oleksandropil, Novomykhailivka, Urozhayne, Staromaiorsk in Donetsk region; Novodarivka and Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia region.
More than 100 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions came under artillery fire.
The frontline situation
The operational situation in the Volyn and Polissia directions remains unchanged.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy maintains a military presence in the border areas, conducts active sabotage activities to prevent the deployment of our troops to threatened areas, and increases the density of minefields along the state border in the Belgorod region.
In the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled 10 enemy attacks in the areas of Synkivka and Petropavlivka in the Kharkiv region.
In the Lyman direction, Ukrainian Armed Forces repelled 11 enemy attacks in the areas of Serebryanske forestry, Bilohorivka, Luhansk region, and Terny, Donetsk region.
In the Bakhmut direction, Ukrainian troops repelled 11 enemy attacks in the areas of Bohdanivka, Klishchiiivka, and Andriivka in the Donetsk region. Ukrainian defense forces continue assault operations south of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, inflicting losses in manpower and equipment on the enemy, and consolidating their positions.
In the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian defenders continue to hold back the enemy, who is making attempts to encircle Avdiivka. Our soldiers are steadfastly holding the line, inflicting significant losses on the enemy. Ukrainian defense forces successfully repelled 18 enemy attacks in the areas east of Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiivka, and Severne in the Donetsk region.
In the Maryinka direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the areas of Maryinka and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region, where our defenders repelled 18 attacks.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, the enemy did not conduct any offensive (assault) actions.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the Defense Forces repelled all attacks by the enemy, who tried to regain their lost ground in the areas south of Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region.
In the direction of Melitopol, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continued to inflict losses in manpower and equipment on the occupation forces, depleting the enemy along the entire front line.
In the Kherson direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continued to hold their positions on the left bank of the Dnipro River, continued to conduct counter-battery combat, and inflicted fire on the enemy's rear.
Offensive by Ukrainian Armed Forces
Over the past day, the aviation of the Defense Forces carried out 10 strikes on areas of concentration of personnel, weapons, and military equipment, and 2 on enemy anti-aircraft missile systems.
Enemy losses
Missile troops struck 3 areas of concentration of personnel, weapons, and military equipment, 2 anti-aircraft missile systems, and 7 enemy artillery units.
