Russia-Ukraine war: Situation on the front as of August 20

Russian Forces conducted unsuccessful offensives in the Kupiansk and Bakhmut direction. Meanwhile, in the Mariupol direction, Defense Forces continue to repel the Invaders, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on their Facebook page.
Russian attacks
During the past 24 hours, the enemy launched 22 airstrikes and conducted 30 shelling incidents using multiple rocket launcher systems on the positions of our troops and populated areas. Unfortunately, as a result of these Russian terrorist attacks, there have been casualties and injuries among the civilian population. Residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure have also suffered damage.
The likelihood of missile and aerial strikes across the entire territory of Ukraine remains high.
The frontline situation
During the past 24 hours, there have been 22 combat clashes.
In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains relatively unchanged.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy conducted an airstrike in the area southwest of Iskrishchyne in the Sumy region. The adversary also carried out artillery and mortar shelling on more than 20 populated areas, including Karpylivychi and Bohdanove in the Chernihiv region; Tovstodubove, Volfyne, Novooleksandrivka in the Sumy region; and Veterynarne, Izbicko, Hatyshche, Volchansk, and Vilcha in the Kharkiv region.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy conducted an airstrike west of Mykolaivka. They also carried out unsuccessful offensive actions in the Synkivka area of the Kharkiv region. Artillery and mortar shelling by the enemy affected populated areas including Topoli, Masiutivka, Kyslivka, and Berestove in the Kharkiv region.
In the Lyman direction, the adversary conducted aerial strikes in the areas of Shyikivka, Terniv, Pyskunivka, and Vesele in the Donetsk region. Approximately 15 populated areas, including Nevske, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Torske, Verkhniokamyanske, Spirne in the Donetsk region, were subjected to enemy artillery shelling.
In the Bakhmut direction, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the Kurdyumivka area of the Donetsk region. They carried out aerial strikes in the areas of Vesele, Klishchiivka, and Kurdyumivka in the Donetsk region. Over 20 populated areas, including Orihovo-Vasylivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka, Stupochky, and Oleksandro-Shultyne in the Donetsk region, suffered from enemy artillery shelling.
In the Avdiivka direction, populated areas such as Keramik, Stepove, Orlivka, Avdiivka, Siverne, and Pervomaiske in the Donetsk region were shelled by enemy artillery.
In the Mariupol direction, the Defense Forces continue to hold back the Russian troops' advance in the Mariinka area of the Donetsk region. The enemy conducted an airstrike in the Krasnohorivka area of the Donetsk region. Populated areas including Krasnohorivka, Mariinka, Pobeda, Kurakhove, Katerynivka, and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region were subjected to enemy artillery shelling.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, the adversary conducted an airstrike in the Staromykhailivka area of the Donetsk region. Artillery shelling by the enemy affected Vodyane, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, Blahodatne, and Urozhaine in the Donetsk region.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the enemy conducted an airstrike in the Robotyne area of the Zaporizhzhia region. More than 30 populated areas, including Novodarivka, Chervona Krynytsia, Mala Tokmachka, Orikhiv, and Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region, were affected by the enemy's artillery shelling.
In the Kherson direction, the adversary carried out aerial strikes in the areas of Olhivka and Sadove in the Kherson region. Over 20 populated areas, including Novodmytrivka, Berislav, Tyahynka, Tokarivka, Ponyativka, and Antonivka in the Kherson region, suffered from enemy artillery shelling.
Counteroffensive operations
At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue their offensive operation in the Melitopol and Berdyansk direction, consolidating their positions at the achieved lines, and conducting counter-battery measures.
Russian losses
During the day, the Air Force of the Defense Forces conducted nine strikes on areas where enemy personnel are concentrated.
Units of missile troops and artillery inflicted damage on one command point and three artillery systems at the enemy's firing positions during the day.
