Russia-Ukraine war: Situation on the front as of August 17

Ukrainian militaries continue to defend the borders of our country and conduct offensive operations on various fronts, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian shelling
During the past day, the enemy carried out 8 rockets and 82 aviation strikes. Russia also conducted 76 artillery shelling attacks using multiple launch rocket systems on the positions of our troops and civilian settlements.
Furthermore, as a result of Russian terrorist attacks, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population, including children.
"Port infrastructure in the Odesa region, residential buildings, and other civilian infrastructure in the Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kherson regions have been damaged," reported the General Staff.
Frontline situation
The operational situation in the Volyn and Polissia directions remains relatively unchanged.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske direction, the enemy conducted airstrikes in the areas of Chervona Zoria, Veternyi, Kozacha Lopana, Hatyshche, and Rohan in the Kharkiv region.
They also carried out mortar and artillery shelling on more than 15 settlements:
- Tymonovychi, Bleshnia in Chernihiv region;
- Turiia, Stepok, Hrabovske in Sumy region, as well as Vovchansk, Vovchanski Hutori, Okhrimivka, Potykhonove, Chuhunivka in Kharkiv region.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Kupiansk, Petropavlivka, Podoliv, Tabaiivka, Pisky-Radkivski, Cherneshchyna in the Kharkiv region, and Nadiia in Luhansk region. The enemy's unsuccessful offensive actions took place in the area of Senkivka in the Kharkiv region. Artillery and mortar shelling by the enemy affected the settlements of Vilshana, Petropavlivka, and Cherneshchyna in the Kharkiv region.
In the Lyman direction, the enemy conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Nevske, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Siversk in the Donetsk region. About 20 settlements, including Nevske, Dybrova, Bilohorivka in Luhansk region, and Viyimka, Pereizne, Rozdolivka, and Pazenno in Donetsk region, were targeted by enemy artillery shelling.
In the Bakhmut direction, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the area of Bohdanivka in the Donetsk region. Aviation strikes by the enemy targeted the areas of Ivanivka, Pryvillia, Minkivka, and Bila Hora in the Donetsk region. Over 15 settlements, including Andriivka, Bila Hora, Dyliivka, and Pivnichne in Donetsk region, were affected by enemy artillery shelling.
In the Avdiivka direction, under heavy fire from enemy aviation and artillery, our defenders continue to hold back the Russian forces' advance in the area of Avdiivka in the Donetsk region. Artillery shelling by the enemy impacted more than 10 settlements, including Oleksandropil, Novokalynove, Avdiivka, Tonenke, Siversk, Pervomaiske, and Nevelske in the Donetsk region.
In the Mariupol direction, the Defense Forces continue to restrain the Russian forces' advance in the area of the city of Mariinka in the Donetsk region. The enemy conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Krasnohorivka and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region. More than 10 settlements, including Krasnohorivka, Mariinka, Pobiieda, Paraskoviyivka, and Vodyane in the Donetsk region, were subjected to enemy artillery shelling.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, the enemy conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Blahodatne, Urozhaine, and Staromykhailivka in the Donetsk region. Over 10 settlements, including Vodyane, Bohoyavlenska, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Velyka Novosilka, Blahodatne, and Urozhaine in the Donetsk region, were affected by enemy artillery shelling.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the enemy conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Malaya Tokmachka and Novodanilivka in the Zaporizhzhia region. Over 20 settlements, including Omelnyk, Novoandriyivka, Kamianske, Plavni, and Lukyanivske in the Zaporizhzhia region, suffered from enemy artillery shelling.
In the Kherson direction, more than 10 settlements, including Khrystenivka, Novodymytrivka, Mykolaivka, Sadove, Zelenivka, Berehove, Kizomys in Kherson region, and the city of Kherson, were subjected to enemy artillery shelling.
Counteroffensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces
Simultaneously, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue their offensive operation in the Melitopol and Berdyansk directions, consolidating their positions at achieved front lines, and conducting counter-battery measures.
Enemy losses
During the past day, the defense aviation delivered 10 strikes on the areas of enemy personnel concentration, armament, and military equipment, and 1 strike on an anti-aircraft missile complex. Additionally, our defenders destroyed 8 reconnaissance UAVs of operational-tactical level.
Rocket troops and artillery units targeted and hit 1 enemy anti-aircraft missile complex during the past day.
