Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 17

Sixty-two combat engagements had already occurred on the front as of 4 pm on January 17. The Pokrovsk and Huliaipole directions remain the most difficult, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian attacks
The General Staff reported that today, enemy artillery and mortar fire hit communities in the Kliusy, Pliokhiv, and Huta Studenetska settlements in the Chernihiv region, and in the Iskryskivshchyna and Budky settlements in the Sumy region. Russians made an air attack on the Rohizne settlement.
Frontline situation
Northern-Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions: Since the start of the day, the enemy has carried out two airstrikes using eight guided aerial bombs and launched 42 artillery attacks, including two from multiple rocket launchers.
Southern-Slobozhanskyi direction: The Ukrainian forces repelled five enemy attacks; four clashes are ongoing. The Russian army is attempting to advance near the Vovchanski Khutory settlement and toward Kruhle and Chuhunivka settlements.
Kupiansk direction: The enemy attempted four times to push Ukrainian units out of their positions toward Petropavlivka settlement; one clash is ongoing.
Lyman direction: The Russian army launched six attacks on Ukrainian defenders' positions near the Myrne and Zarichne settlements, and toward Novoserhiivka, Stavky, Drobysheve, and Lyman; two clashes are ongoing.
Sloviansk and Kramatorsk directions: No enemy offensive actions.
Kostiantynivka direction: Russians attacked seven times near the settlements of Oleksandro-Shultyne, Shcherbynivka, Pleshchiivka, and toward Ivanopillia, Illinivka, and Sofiivka.
Pokrovsk direction: Since the start of the day, Russian forces have made 22 attempts to dislodge Ukrainian troops from positions near the Nykanorivka, Rodynske, Sukhetske, Rivne, Kotlyne, Udachne, and Molodetske settlements, and toward the Novopavlivka and Filiia settlements. Ukrainian defenders repelled 19 attacks.
Oleksandrivka direction: Ukrainian defenders repelled two enemy assaults. Russian troops are trying to advance near the Vyshneve and Zlahoda settlements. One engagement is ongoing. The enemy made an airstrike on the Dibrova settlement.
Huliaipole direction: Fifteen clashes occurred near the Solodke and Huliaipole settlements, and toward Varvarivka and Zelene settlements. Five are ongoing. Russian airstrikes again hit Rizdvianka and Zaliznychne settlements.
Orikhiv and Prydniprovskyi directions: No enemy offensive actions so far.
Russian losses
With each day of the war, the Russian army continues to lose more personnel. From January 16 to 17, the enemy lost 1,130 soldiers.
In addition, Ukrainian defense forces destroyed 3 tanks, 31 artillery systems, and over 700 drones.
Overall, since the start of the full-scale war, Russian military losses have exceeded 1.2 million personnel.
