Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of May 28

The front line has seen an increase in the number of enemy assaults and attacks compared to the previous day. As of the evening of May 28, there had already been 197 combat engagements, whereas the same period yesterday saw 166, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The military command provided an update on the operational situation as of 10:00 p.m. Kyiv time on May 28.
Russian attacks
Since the beginning of the day on May 28, Russian forces have launched 2 missile strikes and 60 airstrikes on the positions of Ukraine’s Defense Forces and populated areas. They used 3 missiles and dropped 114 guided aerial bombs.
In addition, the enemy carried out 1,205 kamikaze drone strikes, as well as 4,036 artillery shellings.
Frontline situation
- Kharkiv direction — there were 3 enemy assaults in the areas of Starytsia, Vovchansk, and Krasne Pershe.
- Kupiansk direction — the enemy tried 8 times to push Ukrainian Armed Forces units out of their positions in the areas of Zahryzove and Zelenyi Hai.
- Lyman direction — Russian forces launched 24 attacks, attempting to advance in the areas of Ridkodub, Kolodiazi, Nadiia, Hrekivka, and the Serebrianske Forestry, as well as towards Karpivka, Serednie, Novyi Myr, and Zelena Dolyna. Three combat engagements are still ongoing.
- Siversk direction — the Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully repelled 3 enemy attacks near Verkhniokamianske and Hryhorivka.
- Kramatorsk direction — Ukrainian defenders stopped 15 enemy attempts to advance toward Markove, Predtechyne, and near Chasiv Yar and Bila Hora.
- Toretsk direction — Russian forces tried 21 times to break through the Ukrainian defense in the areas of Toretsk, Dyliivka, Druzhba, and toward Pleshchiivka and Oleksandro-Kalynove.
- Pokrovsk direction — the enemy carried out 52 assault and offensive actions near Myroliubivka, Malynivka, Myrne, Lysivka, Kotlyne, Udachne, Kotliarivka, Horikhove, Oleksiivka, and in the directions of Zoria, Rusyn Yar, Novomykolaivka, and Yablunivka. The Russians also launched airstrikes on Dovha Balka, Zoria, Oleksandro-Kalynove, Novotoretske, Pokrovsk, Novoukrainka, Myrnohrad, and Sukhyi Yar.
“According to preliminary estimates, today Ukrainian soldiers in this direction have neutralized 143 Russian soldiers, 97 of them irreversibly. Our defenders also destroyed seven vehicles, five motorcycles, and 16 unmanned aerial vehicles,” the General Staff reported.
- Novopavlivka direction — Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 14 enemy attacks in the areas of Kostyantynopil, Bahatyr, Novopil, Zelene Pole, Vilne Pole, and toward Voskresenka and Odradne. The Russian army carried out airstrikes on Zaporizhzhia, Komar, and Myrne.
- Huliaipole direction — in this area, the settlement of Malynivka was hit by airstrikes from Russian soldiers.
- Orikhiv direction — six battles took place here, with the enemy attempting to advance near Shcherbaky, Stepove, Novodanylivka, and Robotyne. One battle is still ongoing.
- Prydniprovskyi direction — two combat engagements with the enemy occurred in this area.
- Kursk direction — since the beginning of the day, 37 battles have been recorded. The enemy carried out 193 artillery shellings, including 3 using multiple rocket launchers (MLRS). Russian forces also launched 16 airstrikes, dropping 30 guided bombs (KABs).
In the evening report of the General Staff on May 27, it was stated that 166 combat clashes had occurred on the front since the beginning of that day. The Defense Forces also clarified that the Pokrovsk direction remained the hottest on the front line.
Additionally, according to Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Russia is using troops in the Sumy direction that were previously transferred to the Kursk region. However, border guards are not observing the movement of enemy equipment convoys toward the border.
