Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of October 16
Since the beginning of October 16, there have been 112 combat engagements on the front lines. The enemy is actively applying pressure in the Kupiansk, Lyman, and Kurakhove directions in the Donetsk region, according to the evening briefing from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Enemy shelling
The enemy launched one missile strike, employing a single missile, and conducted 49 airstrikes, dropping 50 guided aerial bombs (GABs). Additionally, they utilized 655 kamikaze drones and carried out more than 3,500 shelling attacks on the positions of our troops and civilian areas using various types of weaponry.
Frontline situation
In the Kharkiv direction, Russian forces launched four attacks near Starytsia throughout the day. Defense forces successfully repelled all enemy assaults.
According to preliminary reports, since the beginning of the day, the enemy has suffered 65 casualties, including dead and wounded, with 16 UAVs, four units of special equipment, and one vehicle destroyed. Additionally, two armored combat vehicles, five vehicles, and one piece of enemy special equipment sustained significant damage.
In the Kupiansk direction, 18 enemy attacks were recorded today in the areas of Kucherivka, Pishchane, Stepova Novoselivka, Lozova, and Vyshneve, nine of which are ongoing.
In the Lyman direction, Russian forces attacked defense forces 17 times. The enemy attempted to advance in the areas of Hrekivka, Nevske, Terni, and Torske. Our defenders managed to repel 13 enemy attacks, with fighting continuing.
In the Kramatorsk direction, three combat engagements occurred, with Russian forces showing activity in the area of Stupochky. All attempts by the enemy to displace our troops proved futile.
Throughout the day, the Russian army attacked Ukrainian positions near Toretsk once. The assault was repelled, and the enemy achieved no success.
In the Pokrovsk direction, fighting has been ongoing since the start of the day in the areas of Promin, Krutyi Yar, and Selydove. Nine enemy offensive and assault actions were repelled, with two more engagements still ongoing. Our forces are taking measures to maintain designated lines and positions.
Today's enemy losses are estimated at 155 killed and wounded Russian soldiers. Ukrainian servicemen also destroyed a tank, a mortar, two motorcycles, and one piece of automotive equipment. Additionally, an armored personnel carrier and two mortars sustained significant damage.
In the Kurakhove direction, there have been 46 enemy attacks reported so far. The Russian forces are most active near Tsukuryne, Novoselivka, Hirnyk, Hryhorivka, and in the vicinity of Vodiane. Defense forces have repelled 26 enemy assaults, and fighting continues without pause.
In the Vremivka direction, our forces repelled three enemy attacks aimed at Bohoyavlenka, Novoukrainka, and near Zolota Nyva.
In the Orikhiv direction, our troops successfully defended against one enemy attack in the area of Mala Tokmachka.
In the Prydniprovskyi direction, our units effectively repelled six assault actions by the Russian army against our positions.
Frontline situation and forecasts
According to military expert Oleksii Hetman, the battle with Russian forces for the city of Toretsk in the Donetsk region may drag on.
In the Donetsk region, the grey zone has encroached closely to the city of Selydove. The Armed Forces of Ukraine will likely have to withdraw and cede the settlement to the Russian army.
