Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of September 21

As of 4:00 p.m. on September 21, 81 combat engagements were recorded at the front since the beginning of the day. The Russian forces continue to shell Ukrainian cities and towns, as well as the Kursk region, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The General Staff noted that the Ukrainian Armed Forces' operation in the Kursk region continues. Meanwhile, enemy aviation continues to level their own villages and towns. Since the beginning of the day, Russian aircraft have conducted twelve strikes with guided bombs on their own territory.

As in previous days, Russian forces continue to devastate Ukrainian cities and villages with missile, air, and artillery strikes.
Today, communities in the Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions have been affected by enemy artillery and mortar fire, including the settlements of Pavlivka, Luhivka, Lyubymivka, Dehtiarne, Vidrodzhenivske, Romashkove, Khmeliv, Mezenivka, Brusky, Bobylivka, Rudak, Stepok, Studenok, Svoboda, Chaikyne, and Vilyna Sloboda.
Situation at the frontlines
In the Kharkiv direction, the enemy is trying to storm the positions of Ukrainian units near Vovchansk.
In the Kupiansk direction, Russian forces attacked the Ukrainian Defense Forces five times in the areas of Synkivka, Stepova, Novoselivka, Lozova and Stelmakhivka. One firefight is still ongoing. Enemy aircraft attacked Kupiansk and Kivsharivka with five guided aerial bombs.
In the Lyman direction, the Russian army launched 14 attacks on Ukrainian positions near Druzheliubivka, Cherneshchyna, Nevske, Torske, Novosadove and Terny. Thirteen battles have ended, and one more is ongoing. Ukrainian soldiers are steadfastly holding the line and inflicting losses on the enemy.
The Russian troops continue to look for weaknesses in Ukrainian defense near Vyimka in the Siversk direction. One combat engagement was completed without success for the enemy.
In the Kramatorsk direction, since the beginning of the day, Ukrainian Armed Forces units have repelled seven attacks by Russian forces near Kalynivka, Maiske and Andriivka. Three enemy assaults are still ongoing. The Russian aviation struck Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, Predtechyn and Stupochky with guided aerial bombs and unguided air-to-surface missiles.
In the Toretsk direction, the aggressor tried to break into the Ukrainian positions eight times in the areas of Toretsk, Shcherbynivka and Nelipivka. The enemy is actively using aviation. He struck Toretsk, Bila Hora, Oleksandro-Kalynove with guided aerial bombs, and Druzhba and Dachne with unguided air-to-surface missiles.
In the Pokrovsk direction, Russian forces made 12 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from their positions in the areas of Vozdvyzhenka, Novotoretsk, Novohrodivka, Selidove, Marynivka and Mykhailivka. Defense forces are holding back the onslaught and repelled 10 enemy attacks, two firefights are still ongoing.
In the Kurakhove direction, the enemy army attacked 13 times in the direction of Tsukurine, Hirnyk, Zhelanne Pershe, Heorhiivka, Katerynivka and Kostiantynivka. Seven attempts by the Russian army to advance have already been repelled.
In the Vremivka direction, four hostile attacks took place near Katerynivka and Vuhledar. One battle is still ongoing.
In the Huliaipole direction, Russian forces unsuccessfully attacked the area of Huliaipole.
In the Orikhiv direction, the Russian forces assaulted the positions of the Defense Forces four times near Robotyno, Novoandriivka and Novodanylivka. One firefight is still ongoing.
The situation in other directions remained unchanged.
Russia's losses in the war against Ukraine amounted to 1,440 soldiers over the past day. The Ukrainian Armed Forces also destroyed dozens of enemy tanks, drones and artillery systems.
