Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of March 16

In Ukraine, 50 combat engagements were registered in the frontline over the last day. Ukrainian Armed Forces stopped infiltration attempts of two enemy subversive reconnaissance groups in Sumy region, and the largest number of enemy attacks took place in the Avdiivka direction, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian attacks
In total, the enemy launched 1 missile and 43 air strikes, fired 58 times from multiple launch rocket systems at the positions of our troops and populated areas.
The General Staff noted that as a result of Russian terrorist attacks, there are dead and wounded among the civilian population. Multi-storey and private houses, as well as other civilian infrastructure facilities, were destroyed and damaged.
Situation at the frontlines
The operational situation in the Volyn and Polissia directions remained unchanged. There are no signs of enemy offensive groups forming.
At the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy maintains a military presence in the border areas, conducts sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shells settlements from the territory of the Russian Federation, and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine.
Also, the Armed Forces of Ukraine stopped 2 attempts of infiltration by enemy subversive reconnaissance groups near Stara Huta and Brusky in Sumy region.
The enemy conducted air strikes in the areas of Velyka Pysarivka, Stara Huta, Ryzhivka, Popivka, Yamne, Oleksandrivka, and Luhivka in Sumy region. More than 30 settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Kliusy, Yeline, Leonivka, Hremyach in Chernihiv region; Ryzhivka, Rozhkovychi, Stepanivka, Sosnivka, Popivka in Sumy region; Kozacha Lopan, Lukianets, Zelene, Starytsia, Hatyshche in Kharkiv region.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy did not conduct any assault operations. More than 10 localities came under artillery and mortar fire, including Synkivka, Ivanivka, and Berestove in Kharkiv region.
In the Lyman direction, the Defense Forces repelled one enemy attack near Bilohorivka, Luhansk region. The enemy conducted air strikes near Novoyehorivka, Luhansk region; Spirne, Vesele, Rozdolivka, Donetsk region.
More than 20 localities suffered from artillery and mortar shelling, including Bilohorivka in Luhansk region, Terny, Yampolivka, Torske, Serebryanka, Spirne in Donetsk region.
In the Bakhmut direction, the Ukrainian Armed Forces repelled four enemy attacks in the areas of Ivanivske, Klishchiyivka and east of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region. The enemy launched air strikes near Chasiv Yar and Druzhba in the Donetsk region.
About 10 localities came under artillery and mortar fire, including Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, and New York in the Donetsk region.
In the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian Armed Forces repelled more than 10 enemy attacks in the vicinity of Berdychi, Tonenke, Pervomayske and Nevelske in Donetsk region. About 20 localities came under artillery and mortar fire, including Novobakhmutivka, Umanske, Netaylove, Pervomayske in the Donetsk region.
In the Novopavlivka direction, the Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the areas of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Novomykhailivka in Donetsk region, where the enemy, with the support of aviation, tried to break through the defense of our troops 19 times. The enemy also conducted air strikes in the areas of Krasnohorivka and Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region.
About 20 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Krasnohorivka, Kostiantynivka, Vuhledar, Prechystivka in Donetsk region.
In the Orikhiv direction, the enemy attacked the positions of our defenders 4 times in the areas of Robotyne and northwest of Verbove in Zaporizhzhia region. About 15 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Poltavka, Charivne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka in Zaporizhzhia region.
Situation on the left bank of the Dnipro River
In the Kherson direction, the enemy conducted two attacks on the positions of our troops on the left bank of the Dnipro River over the past day.
More than 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Ochakiv in Mykolaiv region; Krynky, Tyahyntsi, Ivanivka, Berehove and the regional center of Kherson region.
Enemy losses
During the day, the aviation of the Defense Forces struck 4 areas of concentration of enemy personnel, weapons and military equipment.
Units of the Armed Forces missile forces struck a control center, 2 areas of concentration of personnel and 1 enemy air defense system.
Earlier it was reported that over the last day alone, the Defense Forces eliminated 1160 Russian occupants and destroyed dozens of enemy vehicles.
Earlier, British intelligence said that Russia's average daily losses in February were the highest since the beginning of the full-scale war against Ukraine.
