Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 9

Ukrainian military repelled 18 enemy attacks on the Avdiivka sector, expanding the foothold in the Kherson direction. Air defense forces destroyed 18 cruise missiles Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian attacks
During the past 24 hours, there have been 67 military clashes. The enemy conducted a total of 55 missile and 22 aviation strikes, as well as 35 shelling episodes using multiple rocket launch systems on the positions of our forces and civilian settlements.
Unfortunately, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population due to Russian terrorist attacks. Residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure have suffered destruction and damage.
Aviation strikes were carried out in:
- Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Kyslivka, Tabaiivka, Pisky, Berestove in the Kharkiv region
- Serebrianske forestry in the Luhansk region
- Novoselivka in the Donetsk region.
Approximately 130 settlements in the Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions came under artillery fire.
The situation at the frontlines
In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains unchanged.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy maintains military presence in border areas, actively engages in sabotage activities to prevent the redeployment of our forces to critical directions, and increases the density of mine-explosive obstacles along the state border in the Belgorod region.
In the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled 5 enemy attacks near Synkivka in the Kharkiv region.
In the Lyman direction, our warriors repelled 2 attacks by occupiers east of Terniv in the Donetsk region.
In the Bakhmut direction, our defenders repelled 2 enemy attacks in the areas of Klishchiivka and Andriivka in the Donetsk region.
In the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian defenders continue to restrain the enemy, who doesn't abandon attempts to encircle Avdiivka. Our soldiers hold the defense steadfastly, inflicting significant losses on the occupiers.
During the past day, the Defense Forces repelled 3 enemy attacks near Avdiivka, Severne, and Tonenke, and another 15 attacks near Pervomaiske and Nevelske in the Donetsk region.
In the Maryinka direction, the Defense Forces continue to restrain the invaders in the areas of Heorhiivka and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region, where 12 attacks were repelled.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, the enemy did not conduct offensive (assault) actions.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the Defense Forces repelled 7 enemy attacks south of Chervone, west of Verbove, and north of Novoprokopivka.
In the Kherson direction, Ukrainian defenders continue to expand the bridgehead. Despite significant losses, the enemy does not abandon attempts to dislodge our units from their positions.
At the same time, our soldiers continue active actions, inflicting losses on the occupation forces in personnel and equipment, exhausting the enemy along the entire front line.
Enemy losses
During the past day, the Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed 18 cruise missiles Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55.
Missile troops units targeted 2 enemy ammunition depots.
The total number of losses in the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion is 365,170 military personnel.
