Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 5

Russian shelling

During the day, there were 56 combat clashes. In total, the enemy launched 3 missile strikes and 16 airstrikes, conducting 12 artillery shelling with reactive volley fire on the positions of our troops and residential areas.

Unfortunately, due to Russian terrorist attacks, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population. Residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure have suffered destruction and damage.

Additionally, on the night of January 5, 2024, Russian occupiers once again attacked Ukraine, employing 29 attack UAVs of the Shahed-136/131 type. 21 enemy drones were successfully destroyed by air defense systems.

Frontline situation

The operational situation in the east and south of Ukraine remains complex.

In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains unchanged with no significant alterations. There are no signs of the formation of offensive groupings. Identified units of the Armed Forces of Belarus are carrying out tasks in border areas with Ukraine.

In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy maintains military presence in border regions, conducts sabotage-reconnaissance activities, shells populated areas from the territory of the Russian Federation, and increases the density of mine-explosive obstacles along the state border of Ukraine.

Approximately 15 populated areas, including Popivka in the Chernihiv region; Znob-Trubchevska, Seredyna-Buda, Marchykha Buda, Vovkivka in the Sumy region; Hatysche, Bochkove, Dvorichanske in Kharkiv region, experienced enemy artillery and mortar shelling.

In the Kupiansk direction, Defense Forces repelled 7 enemy attacks in the area of Synkivka in the Kharkiv region. About 10 populated areas, including Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove in the Kharkiv region, came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Lyman direction, the enemy did not engage in offensive actions. Artillery and mortar shelling targeted over 10 populated areas, including Nevske, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Torske, Verkhniokamianske, Spirne in the Donetsk region.

In the Bakhmut direction, Defense Forces repelled 3 attacks near Klishchiivka and Andriivka in the Donetsk region, where the enemy attempted to break through the defense of our troops.

Over 10 populated areas, including Vasiukivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka, Andriivka, and New York in the Donetsk region, came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Avdiivka direction, our defenders repelled 3 enemy attacks in the areas of Novobakhmutivka, Avdiivka, and another 16 near Pervomaiske and Nevelske in the Donetsk region, where the adversary unsuccessfully tried to improve their tactical position.

Approximately 10 populated areas, including Novokalynove, Berdychiv, Avdiivka, Vodiane, and Pervomaiske in the Donetsk region, experienced enemy artillery and mortar shelling.

In the Maryinka direction, Defense Forces continue to restrain occupiers near Mariinka, Pobeda, and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region. The enemy attempted 15 times to break through the defense of our troops here. Under artillery and mortar fire of the invaders, Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Maksymilianivka, Mariinka, Novomykhailivka, and Kostiantynivka were affected.

In the Shakhtarsk direction, the enemy did not engage in offensive actions. Artillery and mortar shelling targeted over 10 populated areas, including Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Urozhaine, and Staromykhailivske in the Donetsk region.

In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the adversary did not conduct offensive (assault) actions. More than 15 populated areas, including Levadne, Malynivka, Huliaypole, Pyatykhatky, and Kamyanske in the Zaporizhzhia region, experienced artillery and mortar shelling.

In the operational zone of operational-strategic group Odesa in the Kherson direction, the enemy artillery shelling targeted Zolota Balka, Ivanivka, Sadove, Kherson, Blahovishchenske, Veletenske, and Kizomys in the Kherson region, as well as Solonchaky in the Mykolaiv region.

Additionally, the enemy conducted an aviation strike in the area near the settlement of Chervonyi Mayak in the Kherson region.

Advance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces

Occupiers persist in their intent to dislodge our units from bridgeheads on the left bank of the Dnipro.

Indeed, during the day, the enemy carried out 10 unsuccessful assault actions. However, Ukrainian soldiers continue to hold their positions and inflict significant losses on the aggressors.

Enemy losses

During the day, the Defense Forces aviation conducted strikes on 5 concentrations of enemy personnel.

Units of the missile forces targeted the command post, ammunition depot, and artillery means of the enemy.

It is worth noting that the total number of losses in the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion amounts to 363,070 military personnel.
