Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of December 31

Ukrainian forces repelled 13 enemy attacks in the Kherson direction, holding the adversary on the Avdiivka front. Aviation targeted 7 enemy artillery units, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian shelling
Over the past day, there were 54 combat clashes. In total, the enemy launched 9 missile strikes and 55 aerial attacks, conducting 79 artillery shelling using multiple rocket launcher systems on the positions of our forces and civilian areas.
Russian occupiers once again attacked Ukraine, using guided X-59 missiles on the cities of Dnipro and Odesa, an Iskander missile on Zaporizhzhia, and S-300 anti-aircraft guided missiles on civilian objects in the central part of Kharkiv.
An air defense system successfully intercepted the guided X-59 missile. Unfortunately, due to Russian terrorist attacks, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population. Private residential buildings, multi-story houses, hotels, hospitals, and other civilian and industrial infrastructure have suffered destruction and damage.
The following locations experienced aerial attacks:
- Archipivka in the Chernihiv region;
- Tovstodubove in the Sumy region;
- Synkivka, Pischane in the Kharkiv region;
- Novoselivske, Stelmakhivka, Nadiya, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region;
- Avdiivka, Novomykhailivka, Staromykhailivske in the Donetsk region;
- Tyahynka and Kherson in the Kherson region.
Approximately 150 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Mykolaiv Oblasts came under artillery fire.
The situation on the fronts
In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains unchanged.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy maintains military presence in border areas, conducts sabotage and reconnaissance activities to prevent the redeployment of our forces to critical directions. Additionally, they are increasing the density of mine-explosive barriers along the state border in the Belgorod region.
In the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled 8 enemy attacks near Synkivka, Kharkiv region, where the enemy unsuccessfully tried to break through the defenses of our troops.
In the Lyman direction, the Defense Forces repelled two enemy attacks near Makiivka in the Luhansk region.
In the Bakhmut direction, our troops repelled 9 enemy attacks in the areas of Bohdanivka, Klishchiivka, and Andriivka in the Donetsk region.
In the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian defenders continue to hold back the enemy, who keeps trying to surround Avdiivka. Our soldiers strongly hold the defense, inflicting significant losses on the invaders.
Our defenders repelled 5 enemy attacks in the areas of Stepove and Avdiivka, and another 13 attacks near Pervomaiske and Nevelske in the Donetsk region.
In the Maryinka direction, the Defense Forces continue to restrain the enemy in the areas of Krasnohorivka, Maryinka, and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region, where our defenders repelled 8 attacks.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, our defenders repelled two enemy attacks near Pryiutne in the Zaporizhzhia region.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the Defense Forces repelled 4 enemy attacks west of Verbove and east of the settlement of Kopani in the Zaporizhzhia region.
In the Kherson direction, Ukrainian soldiers the Defense Forces continue measures to expand the foothold. Despite significant losses, the enemy does not cease attempts to dislodge Ukrainian units from their positions. Thus, during the past day, the enemy carried out 13 unsuccessful assaults on the positions of the Defense Forces.
The Defense Forces of Ukraine continue active actions, inflicting losses on the occupying forces in manpower and equipment, exhausting the enemy along the entire front line.
Enemy losses
During the past day, our aviation struck targets in 11 areas of concentration of personnel, armaments, and military equipment, as well as 3 anti-aircraft missile complexes of the enemy.
The units of the missile forces hit 3 anti-aircraft missile complexes, the area of concentration of personnel, weapons and military equipment, 7 artillery means and 3 radio electronic warfare stations of the enemy.
Reminder that the total number of losses for the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion is 358,270 military personnel.
