Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of September 21

Ukrainian defense forces have successfully repelled Russian attacks in the Bakhmut, Maryinka, Zaporizhzhia, and Shakhtarsk directions. Meanwhile, Ukrainian military forces continue to carry out offensive operations in the Melitopol direction, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian attacks
According to updated information, on the night of September 21, Russia launched another massive missile strike on Ukraine's energy, industrial, and civilian infrastructure using 44 air-launched cruise missiles (Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55) and six S-300 guided anti-aircraft missiles. Air Force and Air Defense forces destroyed 38 cruise missiles.
In total, the enemy carried out 52 missile and 44 aviation strikes and conducted 43 artillery bombardments using multiple rocket launchers on the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements.
Russian terrorist attacks have resulted in casualties and injuries among the civilian population. Residential buildings, civilian educational institutions, medical facilities, dormitories, and other civilian infrastructure have suffered damage and destruction.
Frontline situation
The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains complex, with over 20 clashes occurring within a day.
In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains unchanged. There are no significant signs of enemy offensive groups forming. Belarusian armed forces units have been identified in border areas with Ukraine.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy retains a military presence in border areas and continues shelling settlements from Russian territory. An airstrike was carried out in the vicinity of Dihtiarne in the Sumy region. Artillery and mortar shelling by the enemy targeted over 20 settlements.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy conducted airstrikes in the areas of Berestove, Kopanky, and Shyikivka in the Kharkiv region. Artillery and mortar shelling affected more than 10 settlements.
In the Lyman direction, enemy airstrikes targeted areas around Nevske in the Luhansk region and Dibrova in the Donetsk region. Artillery and mortar shelling affected more than 10 settlements.
In the Bakhmut direction, Ukrainian defense forces successfully repelled enemy attacks northeast of Hryhorivka in the Donetsk region. The enemy attempted to regain lost ground in the area of Andriivka in the Donetsk region but was unsuccessful. The enemy carried out airstrikes in the areas of Andriivka, Minkivka, Klishchiivka, and Pivnichne in the Donetsk region. More than 20 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Chasiv Yar, Klishchiivka, Stupochky, Bila Hora in the Donetsk region.
In the Avdiivka direction, the enemy conducted an aviation strike in the area of Arkhanhelske in the Donetsk region. Approximately 10 settlements were subjected to enemy artillery and mortar fire.
In the Maryinka direction, Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled 8 enemy attacks in the areas of Maryinka and Krasnohorivka in the Donetsk region. The enemy carried out an aviation strike in the area of Yelyzavetivka. Approximately 10 settlements were under enemy fire.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, Ukrainian defense forces successfully repelled an enemy attack in the area of Mykilske in the Donetsk region. The enemy carried out aviation strikes in the areas of Vuhledar, Urozhaine, and Staromaiorske in the Donetsk region. More than 10 settlements were subjected to enemy artillery and mortar fire.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, Ukrainian defense forces successfully repelled an enemy attack in the area of Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region. The enemy conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Bilohiria, Mala Tokmachka, and Robotyne. Over 20 settlements were shelled by enemy artillery and mortars.
In the Kherson direction, the enemy carried out aviation strikes in the areas of Lvove and Tiahynka in the Kherson region. Enemy artillery and mortar fire targeted approximately 10 settlements.
Offensive operations
Ukrainian defense forces continue their offensive operation in the Melitopol direction and conduct offensive (assault) actions in the Bakhmut direction. They are inflicting losses on the occupying forces in personnel and equipment and draining the enemy along the entire front line.
Russian losses
During the day, the Ukrainian Air Force launched an attack on the command post and conducted 10 strikes on areas where the enemy personnel, weapons, and military equipment were concentrated.
Missile troops also targeted the command post, the area of enemy personnel, weapons, and military equipment, as well as nine artillery systems and two enemy electronic warfare stations.
