Russian hackers attempted to target several venues of the Winter Olympic Games, which will take place in Italy from February 6 to 22, said Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
"We prevented a series of cyberattacks on the offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, starting from Washington, as well as on some venues of the Winter Olympic Games, including hotels in Cortina," Tajani said.
He stressed that the attacks were "of Russian origin."
Olympic truce
In October last year, Tajani said Rome was preparing an official proposal to the United Nations to establish an Olympic truce during the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The Italian initiative calls for a ceasefire in all armed conflicts worldwide, including the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Tajani said Italy aims to become a crossroads of the world and a world champion in diplomatic efforts.
He also said the country considers it necessary to use the Olympic venues in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo to de-escalate global tensions.
A few days ago, Italian President Sergio Mattarella also called on countries involved in armed conflicts to observe a truce during the 2026 Olympic Games.
