Russia strikes residential buildings in Luhansk region: Numerous casualties
The Russian occupiers attacked the residential high-rise buildings in the temporarily occupied Rubizhne, Luhansk region, from the air. Due to numerous witnesses and a large number of victims, Russians could not conceal the incident, according to Artem Lysohor, head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration.
"The invaders hit a residential area of the city with FAB-250 bombs, which is one of the few that survived their assaults in the spring of 2022. Now these houses have been destroyed as well," he says.
Usually, according to the head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the Russian occupiers refer to shelling by Ukrainian troops during such "extraordinary" events, but this time this "scenario" was prevented by numerous witnesses.
"They saw both the Russian fighter jet and the actual munition. It was impossible to hide it and attribute it to the enemy. The injured are being hospitalized, the less serious ones are being transported to a temporary accommodation center. The search for the missing continues," notes Lysohor.
Russian shelling of Ukraine with high-explosive aerial bombs
This is not the first time Russia has used various types of high-explosive aerial bombs to strike Ukraine. In particular, on May 26 last year, the Russians dropped the same bomb, FAB-250, on New York in the Bakhmut district. It is there, in the Bakhmut direction, as previously reported, that the occupiers are using advanced FAB-500 guided aerial bombs.
Back in April, Yurii Ihnat, a representative of the Ukrainian Air Force, did not rule out that Russia could start regularly attacking Ukraine with guided bombs weighing 1,500 kilograms. Such bombs would strike from a distance of 50 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.
According to Ihnat, to shoot down aircraft that drop such bombs, Ukraine needs Patriot, SAMP-T systems, and modern aircraft, such as F-16s.
At the same time, like any Russian weapon, it is not entirely perfect, and FABs often fall on the territory of Russia before reaching their destination in Ukraine. For example, on May 25, 2023, a similar incident occurred in the Belgorod region.
