Russia strikes civilian ship in Black Sea, captain killed

On the night of September 23, Russian forces struck a cargo ship flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda in the Black Sea. The ship's captain was killed, according to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA) and Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration.
A fire broke out as a result of the Russian attack. The ship's captain, a Ukrainian citizen, was killed. The rest of the crew was evacuated by the Ukrainian Navy, and the fire was extinguished.
"This is yet another Russian terrorist act against civilian shipping. This time, the Russian attack claimed the life of a Ukrainian sailor," the USPA states.
The USPA emphasizes that the world must recognize and properly assess Russia's deliberate terror against civilian shipping and the people who ensure the operation of maritime routes.

Additionally, according to Kiper, in addition to the vessel, the Russians attacked port and civilian infrastructure in the Odesa region.
Furthermore, warehouses storing medicines, household goods, and food were attacked twice in a row. It took several hours to extinguish the fire.
Russian strikes on ships
On September 17, a Russian drone attacked a civilian vessel flying the Tanzanian flag that was en route to one of Ukraine’s ports.
The strike killed the ship's captain, and three other crew members were injured.
Earlier, a foreign civilian vessel sank in the Black Sea near Odesa after being struck by a Russian missile. Ten people were killed as a result of the Russian attack.
In total, over the course of four and a half years of full-scale war, the Russians have destroyed 1,054 Ukrainian port infrastructure facilities and carried out attacks on 232 civilian vessels. The Ukrainian delegation reported these figures during a meeting of the OSCE Forum for Security Cooperation, emphasizing the threat to global food security.
