On the night of February 14, Russia attacked the shelter of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant with an explosive warhead. Radiation background monitoring is currently underway, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

According to the rescuers, after the Russian drone struck the shelter of ChNPP Unit 4, the radiation background remains within normal limits.

“At the ChNPP industrial site, 0.57 μSv/h was recorded, which does not exceed the permissible values,” the rescuers said in a statement.

The radiation background is currently being monitored.

“The situation is under control. Follow the official reports,” the SESU said.

Russian drone strike on Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant

On the morning of Friday, February 14, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that a Russian attack drone with an explosive warhead had hit the shelter of the destroyed 4th power unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant last night.

“The shelter at the Chornobyl NPP was damaged by this drone. The fire has been extinguished. As of now, radiation levels have not increased and are being constantly monitored. According to initial assessments, the damage to the shelter is significant,” Zelenskyy wrote.

At the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Russians also seized the Chornobyl NPP. They held the plant's staff hostage.

On March 31, 2022, the Russians left the territory of the Chornobyl NPP, stealing equipment and documents, and mined the area.
