Russia is deepening its economic ties with Kenya to strengthen political influence in the region and recruit Kenyan citizens to fight against Ukraine, according to the Center for Countering Disinformation.

Moscow is deepening its economic ties with Kenya, aligning its initiatives with the country’s national development strategies. Trade agreements, logistics, and infrastructure projects are being discussed, which could grant Russian companies access to the ports and markets of East Africa.

According to analysts from the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD), such an expansion of Russia’s economic presence provides Moscow with tools of political influence in the region, creating dependency on its resources and control over key logistical hubs.

"The Kremlin seeks to exploit the economic, informational, and human resources of African nations to pursue its own aggressive goals. Moscow uses trade and humanitarian contacts as a cover to recruit citizens of the Global South for the war against Ukraine," the Center’s statement reads.

Kenyans captured by Armed Forces of Ukraine

On November 6, Kenyan President William Ruto held a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Ruto asked for assistance in securing the release of captured Kenyans who had been recruited by Russia to fight against Ukraine. According to him, Zelenskyy agreed.

Russia recruits citizens of African countries through various methods; some are offered money, while others are deceived or coerced.

According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, at least 1,436 citizens from 36 African countries are fighting against Ukraine, although the real number of combatants on the Russian side may be higher.

The minister added that most mercenaries do not survive longer than a month.
