During a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Kenyan President William Ruto asked for his help in freeing Kenyan citizens who had been recruited by Russia to fight in the war against Ukraine, according to Ruto on Twitter (X).

"We expressed concern over young Kenyans who have been illegally recruited to fight in the war in Ukraine, and agreed to raise awareness of the dangers of such ventures," Ruto said.

According to him, Zelenskyy agreed to his request to help secure the release of Kenyans who are being held by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Foreigners in Russia’s war against Ukraine

Yesterday, on November 6, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with Kenyan President William Ruto.

The leaders discussed the issue of Russia recruiting foreign citizens for its criminal war.

Additionally, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, at least 1,436 citizens from 36 African countries are fighting against Ukraine. The actual number of fighters on Russia’s side may be higher.

Russia recruits African citizens using various methods. Some are offered money, others are deceived and do not realize what they are signing up for, or are forced under pressure. Signing a contract is tantamount to signing a death sentence.
