Russia has transitioned entirely to a wartime economy. That is why it is the biggest threat to European security, stated German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, according to Tagesschau.

According to him, the military threat from Russia is growing.

Pistorius stated that Russia has completely switched to a military economy and provides the army with 1,000 to 1,500 tanks every year. This is about twice as many as the combined production of the five largest European countries.

The German Defense Minister believes that it is obvious to everyone that Russia is the biggest threat to the security of European countries, and the situation will not change in the foreseeable future.

Russia's wartime economy

Russia is gradually restructuring its economy into a military format due to the full-scale war in Ukraine. This process includes priority funding for the defense industry, expansion of military production, and increased state control over strategic enterprises.

In 2023, defense spending accounted for about a third of the Russian federal budget. Funding is directed not only to equipment but also to the recruitment of personnel, in particular through the system of private military companies.

The transition to a military economy is increasing pressure on the Russian economy, reducing investment attractiveness and living standards. Nevertheless, the Kremlin continues to build up resources to support the war, which threatens regional security and further escalation of the conflict.

Meanwhile, the EU's sanctions envoy, David O’Sullivan, noted that sanctions have a significant impact on Russia, and this will become increasingly evident. He stated that Putin has been forced to "eat away" Russia’s economy to sustain the war.
