The Russian city of Oryol was attacked by unidentified drones this evening, January 12. The target of the attack was a thermal power plant, according to Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council.

"Something hit the Oryol thermal power plant; it’s on fire," Kovalenko wrote.

At the same time, information appeared online claiming that the Russian energy facility was attacked by drones. Corresponding videos were also published.

Russian monitoring channels had previously warned that a "huge group of drones" was heading toward Oryol.

Attack on the Oryol Thermal Power Plant

Late in the evening of January 8, Russians also complained that the Oryol thermal power plant had allegedly been hit by missiles. Local residents experienced problems with electricity and water supplies.

Later, Oryol region Governor Andrey Klychkov said that an "object of municipal infrastructure" had been damaged in Oryol following the attack.

He confirmed that the city was facing disruptions to water and heating systems.

That same evening, a substation and a thermal power plant were struck in Belgorod. Russians complained about power outages in Belgorod and nearby settlements.

The missile strike on Belgorod, damage to infrastructure, and the blackout were also confirmed by regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.

Such hits on energy facilities in Russia are a consequence of the Russian forces' ongoing attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. In particular, on the night of January 9, Russian forces deliberately struck district boiler houses in Kyiv, leaving half of the capital’s high-rise buildings without heating.

The enemy is terrorizing Ukraine’s civilian population at a time of severe frost.
