Russia's losses in Ukraine as of May 22: +870 troops and 140 units of equipment

From May 21 to 22, the Russian army lost 870 soldiers and 32 artillery systems on the front lines, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The total combat Russian losses from February 24, 2022, to May 22, 2025, are estimated to be:
- military personnel - about 977,650 (+870) Russian troops were eliminated;
- tanks - 10,839 (+4);
- troop-carrying AFVs - 22,574 (+5);
- artillery systems - 28,122 (+32);
- MLRS - 1,388;
- anti-aircraft systems - 1,167;
- aircraft - 372;
- helicopters - 336;
- UAV operational-tactical level - 36,797 (+105);
- cruise missiles - 3,197;
- warships/boats - 28;
- submarines - 1;
- vehicles and fuel tanks - 49,268 (+99);
- special equipment - 3,895.
Airstrikes by Russia
On the night of May 22, Russian forces attacked Ukraine using Shahed kamikaze drones.
Around 2 a.m. Kyiv time, an explosion was heard in Kharkiv.
It later turned out that Russia struck the city with a missile. The attack damaged many residential buildings, and there were casualties among the local population.
Meanwhile, according to ISW, Russia is developing a plan to capture the city of Sumy and part of the Sumy region.
