The Kremlin has cynically stated that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin could order a halt to strikes on Ukraine on election day “if Kyiv decides to hold elections,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated to Russian propaganda media outlets.
“Putin would be ready to order a halt to strikes on Ukraine on election day if Kyiv genuinely wants to hold elections,” Peskov said.
At the same time, Russia rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s proposal for a 60-day ceasefire.
What Ukraine and the US have said about a ceasefire and elections in Ukraine
Discussion of possible elections in Ukraine intensified again after US President Donald Trump said that Ukraine should choose a new leader capable of reaching a peace deal.
In response, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to hold elections if the United States secured Russia’s agreement to a full ceasefire lasting at least 60 days.
According to the president, security must be ensured for citizens who would come to polling stations. He also stressed that the decision on when to hold elections and whom to elect belongs to the Ukrainian people.
American billionaire Elon Musk backed Trump’s remarks, agreeing with his claims that Ukraine needed a change of leadership. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Volodymyr Zelenskyy had the support of the Ukrainian people.
