US President Donald Trump has publicly called on Ukrainians to elect a new leader to replace Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"Do you know what I suggest? I suggest Ukraine get a new leader," the White House chief said.

He also accused Volodymyr Zelenskyy of allegedly being unwilling to end the war with Russia.

Trump began claiming that his Ukrainian counterpart had several opportunities to end the war but, he alleged, failed to take advantage of any of them.

"I suggest Ukraine get a new leader, who can make a deal... Because he [Zelenskyy – ed.] could make many deals, but for some reason, he never does," the US president told reporters.

Why a new Trump-Zelenskyy conflict erupted

The day before, the US president announced that Russia would supply millions of tons of diesel fuel to the US and global markets.

Trump said he had ordered the US Treasury Department to issue a temporary license allowing Russia to begin deliveries.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted immediately and sharply, making no secret of his outrage.

It later emerged that the US president publicly thanked Putin for the diesel deal and responded to Zelenskyy's criticism with a single word.

Importantly, Trump had previously claimed that Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil refineries, rather than the war in the Middle East, were responsible for rising diesel prices.
