Russia pushes to expand infantry foothold in Sumy region, border guards warn

Russia continues to send infantry within the limits of the Yunakivka and Khotin communities in the border area of the Sumy region. Russia is attempting to expand the entry zone, according to the spokesperson of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS), Andrii Demchenko.
As Demchenko noted, the situation is currently difficult.
"I would say, even difficult, because the enemy continues to send its infantry groups into Ukrainian territory within the boundaries of these two communities (Yunakivka and Khotin – ed.). And while at the beginning of such actions, two directions were recorded — towards the settlements of Basivka and Zhuravka — now we observe that the enemy is trying to expand the entry zone of these infantry groups into Ukrainian territory," he said.
Before entering, the enemy resorts to attacking Defense Forces positions, using drones, artillery, guided aerial bombs (GABs), and unguided aerial rockets.
In these directions, the Defense Forces do not observe the use of armored vehicles by the enemy. It may be related to their insufficient quantity or preservation for future actions.
"Infantry groups exclusively, sometimes they try to break through on quad bikes or motorcycles to use speed and advance as far as possible into Ukrainian territory, gain a foothold, hide in burrows, various forest belts, and wait for similar reinforcements in order to accumulate and then expand the battle zone and attack the positions of Ukrainian soldiers," he added.
Situation at the front
According to data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, over the past day, June 1, more than 140 battles took place along the line of combat engagement. The enemy exerted the greatest pressure in the Pokrovsk direction.
As stated in the RBC-Ukraine article Russia's summer offensive. What's next on battlefield and how Ukraine aims to fight back, the enemy currently lacks the forces to advance on every front at once. So, they have picked two sectors for the offensive.
