Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed US President Donald Trump's shift on Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ansa reports.

Meloni emphasized that Russia does not seek peace despite the United States' willingness to engage in dialogue.

"We continue to see no progress on the Russian side: Russia continues to target civilians with increasingly brutal attacks, demonstrating how little Moscow is committed to building the peace we all seek, despite the Trump administration's willingness to engage in dialogue, which Putin has decided not to embrace," the prime minister stated.

She added that Italy welcomes the shift in the US stance.

"We see a change of stance on the part of the United States and we welcome it," Meloni emphasized.

Trump gives Putin 50 days to reach peace deal

US President Donald Trump recently expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the lack of progress in peace negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine.

Trump stated he had expected a peace agreement with Putin two months ago, but no deal materialized.

As a result, Trump warned that the US would impose severe economic measures if an agreement is not reached within 50 days:

"We're going to be doing secondary tariffs if we don't have a deal within 50 days. It's very simple. And they'll be at 100%."

He added that he hopes such measures can be avoided but stressed that the US is prepared to act firmly.
