Russia may have assisted Iran

Iranian drone attacks on CIA facilities in the Persian Gulf have prompted US intelligence analysts to investigate whether Russia provided targeting information or advanced drone technology, according to four people familiar with US intelligence.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said investigators have not yet reached a final conclusion about Russia's possible involvement.

However, analysts point to several factors that could indicate Moscow's role, including:

• the effectiveness of the strikes,
• their apparent precision,
• Russia's broader technical support for Iran.

Iranian attacks on CIA facilities

According to Reuters, at least two CIA sites were targeted in March:

• a CIA station at the US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia,
• a separate CIA facility in eastern Iraq.

Some sources said additional CIA facilities were also attacked, although no further details have been disclosed.

Russia's possible role

An internal memorandum from a Western intelligence agency, described by a regional official, concluded that Russia may have played a role in the attacks on CIA facilities in the region.

Two Western officials based in the Persian Gulf said the Saudi attack involved upgraded Iranian Shahed drones that had been enhanced with Russian assistance.

One drone punched a hole through the embassy's exterior, and a second drone flew through the opening and detonated inside.

No deaths or injuries were reported.

Sources told Reuters that Moscow may be prepared to go even further in disrupting US operations as Washington seeks to bring the war with Iran to an end.

Over the weekend, Iran also launched missile strikes on a US airbase in Jordan, killing two American service members.

Russia's upgraded Shahed drones

Two Western officials in the region said Russia helped improve the Shahed drone's ability to reach its targets. Analysts believe Iran used these upgraded versions during the strike in Riyadh.

A separate source said Russia helped Tehran improve the accuracy of its Shahed-136 drones by supplying the Kometa-M satellite navigation system.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump warned that the US military would respond accordingly to Iranian attacks in the Strait of Hormuz as the conflict continues to escalate.
