Russia has launched a new wave of sabotage operations against Danish companies supplying military products to Ukraine, said Josephine Christensen, a senior analyst at the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET), Reuters reports.
According to Danish intelligence, Russia resorted to direct sabotage after its previous attempts to intimidate the West and stop military aid to Ukraine proved ineffective.
The active phase of preparing and carrying out sabotage operations began in early summer. Intelligence officials note that the Kremlin is becoming increasingly bold in its operations.
"What we saw in the spring was a lot of planning, but very little carried out. What we saw in early summer is that they started to carry out a lot more. Russia is now trying to hit targets that have a direct impact on the front line. That means weapons production," Christensen stressed.
In this context, the Russian Defense Ministry compiled a list of European manufacturers of drones and their components back in April, identifying them as potential targets.
To carry out attacks, Moscow is increasingly using untrained intermediaries in Europe, including drug addicts and people without permanent housing.
Potential recruits are sought through Telegram and other social media platforms.
Recruitment usually begins with simple tasks for easy money, such as photographing facilities and gathering intelligence, monitoring company premises, and directly carrying out acts of sabotage.
"It could be anyone just looking for quick money. If the first person isn't successful, they'll throw another one at the problem until they succeed," the intelligence service explained.
Threat of Russian attacks on NATO countries
Western intelligence services are increasingly warning of possible escalation by Russia against the Alliance.
The Danish Defense Intelligence Service previously warned that Russia plans to step up hybrid attacks against NATO and could even resort to limited military provocations.
In addition, representatives of European intelligence services said that European intelligence agencies had warned of a possible Russian attack on NATO in the near future.
According to experts, a potential test of the Alliance's strength could take place within the next few months.
