Russia launched large-scale nuclear drills involving more than 64,000 troops immediately after similar exercises held by Belarus together with Russia, according to a statement by the Russian Defense Ministry.
Who and what is involved
Exercises, which are taking place from May 19 to 21, involve:
- More than 64,000 military personnel;
- 7,800 units of weapons and equipment;
- More than 200 missile launch systems;
- 8 nuclear submarines with missile armament;
- Strategic and fighter aviation.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced the start of exercises and described them as planned. The Ministry provided no additional explanations regarding the scale of maneuvers.
Earlier, Belarus, together with Russia, launched exercises on the combat use of tactical nuclear weapons. Minsk assured that the maneuvers are not directed against third countries.
Ukraine reacted to these statements, saying that Belarus is turning into a nuclear foothold for Russia.
Meanwhile, the Office of the President of Ukraine does not rule out that the Kremlin leader may announce general mobilization after the State Duma elections.
